The Day I Quit My 9-5 Job (and Started Living My Life) was Both the Scariest and Best Day of My Life
By: Colton Pomeroy
It’s been almost two years since I walked out of a job that had consumed my life.
Working in finance, it was my responsibility to assist angry customers that were considering legal action. I was the recipient of verbal abuse on a daily basis. My supervisors had the authority to implement mandatory extended hours at their discretion. It was also expected that I promptly respond to any communication I received on my company cellphone. After putting in my two week notice, I couldn’t help but feel regret about how this opportunity had worked out. I remembered being so excited about how much more money I would be making. My life was going to be so much better.
I COULD NOT STAND MY DAY JOB
Unfortunately, I couldn’t have foreseen how unreasonable supervisors would demand I be available to them every waking hour of the day. Not a minute would go by where I had the luxury of forgetting about what was going on at the office. I didn’t have a life anymore. I had an around the clock job. Before long, I found myself searching the web for computer based business ideas. A couple of friends of mine were working as freelancers and enjoyed the freedom and flexibility that working from home provided. When I asked what they liked about working from home, they both couldn’t say enough about how flexible their work had become– flexibility in choosing what exactly their work would be, who they would choose to work and do business with and where they could work from.
Life no longer seemed to revolve around their work. Instead, work became a reflection of their lifestyle and how they chose to operate their own business. This was the conversation that finally convinced me to quit my nine to five job and dive in to the world of home based business. When new entrepreneurs ask me for an idea for a small business they can run from home, I will never tell them what industry to pursue or how to operate their business. Instead, my advice usually sounds something like “What are you passionate about? If you could come up with anything to make your life easier or more enjoyable, what would it be?”
I REACHED A BOILING POINT WHERE I DID NOT HAVE THE ENERGY TO DO THIS JOB ANY MORE.
Many successful online entrepreneurs have found their space by creating a community for those that share their same passions and interests. For example, I have personally enjoyed creating a community where other fans of my favorite football team can read articles related to the team and its players. Our site even has a message board where members can talk with each other about the teams.
You might wonder how a site like this makes money. That’s a fair question. Do I really get to earn a living by writing about something I love? I do! Ads placed on the site by relevant advertisers (more on this to come in future posts) allow me to keep the site online and even collect a nice paycheck every once and awhile. Am I making a 6 or 7 figure salary? No. Not yet, anyways. My goal is to continue to work at this, stay determined, and continue to be passionate.
I supplement my income by doing various odd jobs that are widely available on freelancing sites online. In my case, the widespread availability of writing and marketing opportunities available online has allowed me to be incredibly picky about who I work for and what projects I will be doing. For example, if I find a particular client that I enjoy working with, I can develop this relationship and receive more work from him or her in the future. If there is a client that I don’t enjoy working with, I simply need to complete the promised work. Afterward, there are no remaining obligations.
IF YOU’RE MISERABLE WORKING A 9 TO 5, THE ONLY ONE TO BLAME IS THAT PERSON IN THE MIRROR
I always like to start with a small project when I work with an employer for the first time. This allows me to really understand what it would be like to work with a client on a larger project. Running my home-based business in this way allows me to do business with those that I believe will treat me fairly. I don’t want to work with people that will cause me to get burned out. You may decide to run your online business differently and that’s ok! Again, it’s all about flexibility!
You may decide you want to start an e-commerce site. There’s plenty of opportunity in this market! Are you especially passionate or knowledgeable about something that could be sold online? Who knows… This may be the perfect idea for you? I did not know until I made the plunge. In the end, your home business should be something that fits your personality, interests and passions. That can change as time goes by, so don’t be afraid to follow your heart. The fluidity that exists in home-based businesses and their operations is one of the most attractive aspects of taking on such a venture.
QUITTING MY 9-5 DAYJOB WAS THE BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE
Flexibility in what you do and who you work with are both wonderful advantages to starting an online business. Another incredible advantage is that you can work virtually anywhere with an Internet connection. The power of the internet is incredible.
I personally do my fair amount of traveling. Bargain hunting for cheap flights has always been one of my favorite activities. It’s not unusual for me to find a cheap flight to a new destination and work from a coffee shop periodically as I explore a new city. This past year I had the pleasure of traveling throughout North and South America. I am proud to say that I didn’t have to use a single sick day! I never would have had the freedom to travel this way had I stayed chained to my old finance job. When I’m back at home in the US, I rarely work from the same physical location two days in a row. Some days I choose to work from home. Other days I choose to meet up with a friend at their apartment or at a local coffee shop. Working online has allowed me to work from virtually anywhere I could imagine. I don’t do this or recommend it, but I could even work from bed if I wanted to.
WORKING ON MY OWN TERMS GIVES ME A WHOLE, NEW PERSPECTIVE ON LIFE
While the freedom to work from wherever I want is definitely pretty great, nothing tops being able to set my own hours. Sure, this could be a really bad thing if I wasn’t disciplined enough to get my work done. I’ll admit, in the past I’ve really struggled with setting aside time to write.
Procrastination can lead to serious problems though if you’re counting on this income to pay your bills. If you decide to put off work for a whole month you probably won’t have the money to buy groceries or pay your rent. Don’t get me wrong though, when used responsibility the freedom to choose your own hours is an incredible thing. Being able to set your own hours means being able to say “yes” to more of the good things in life– the spontaneous beach trip, a friend calling you to get lunch or staying up just a little too late binge watching your favorite series on Netflix.
As I said before, this freedom does come with a ton of responsibility. Your business isn’t something you should be treating carelessly. At the same though, it shouldn’t run your life. Work should compliment our lives and enable us to fulfill our dreams.
If running a small business is your dream, you’re in luck. A website is all that’s really needed these days to get your next big idea off the launch pad. With a little dedication, you’ll be reaching your audience in no time. It’s never been easier to become your own boss and make an incredible life for yourself and your family. At the same time, work and business may not be at the top of your list of priorities. I’m there with you, don’t worry. The fact is, work is a part of life. If you’re not working, you aren’t going to be able to survive. You may be stuck in the daily cycle of working that nine to five. You may feel hopeless. I’m here today to tell you that you don’t need to stay at a job you hate.
FREELANCING HAS GIVEN ME A NEW LEASE ON LIFE
Online businesses offer a way for you to make money doing something that you love on your time. You can be your own boss and live the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of. It’s not always going to be easy, but the path to financial freedom and flexibility is within reach! The Internet is providing opportunities that did not exist even a decade ago. For the first time, the average worker has access to global markets directly from his or her home computer! You too can experience the freedom of working when you want, where you want, for who you want doing what you want. You really are the boss. No one tells you what you need or have to do. You do what you want to do.
